Exploring the Soul in the Digital Age
"Immortal Code" is an interactive installation concept currently in its experimental stage. It aims to examine the intersection of technology, identity, and metaphysical thought. Through visual and auditory interactivity, this project explores the possibility of our digital presence evolving into a new "soul"—a lasting essence shaped by our actions and data in the digital realm.
While the foundational experiments with Processing and Xbox Kinect have been completed, the vision for "Immortal Code" extends far beyond these preliminary stages. The final installation would take place in a fully immersive, dark square space, with visuals projected onto all four walls and sound dynamically generated in response to audience interaction. This proposal outlines the creative and technical aspirations for the project, as well as its conceptual underpinnings.
Concept and Vision
At its core, "Immortal Code" explores the idea that the "soul" may no longer be confined to traditional metaphysical beliefs. Historically, the soul has been imagined as a part of us that returns to the universe after death. This installation challenges that idea, asking: What if our "soul" is now being transferred into the digital world? With the vast amounts of data collected on us—our habits, movements, and interactions—are we unknowingly creating a new digital essence that could exist long after our physical selves are gone?
The installation juxtaposes this metaphysical concept with tangible, interactive experiences, offering a sensory exploration of our presence in the digital age. It invites participants to reflect on the digital landscapes we inhabit and their potential to become not just tools, but extensions of who we are.
Current Experiments + Next Steps
The initial experiments for Immortal Code focused on using Processing and an Xbox Kinect to explore the interaction between audience presence and digital output. These tests successfully demonstrated the potential for dynamic visuals and sound generation in response to movement and sound. However, this is just the beginning.
The next steps include:
1) Refining the interactivity to create a seamless experience where the visuals, sound, and participant movements feel cohesive and immersive.
2) Expanding the sensory elements to include more nuanced soundscapes and possibly live elements to blend the organic and digital realms.
3) Designing and testing the setup for the intended square space with projections on all walls, to fully envelop the audience in the digital environment.
Future Exhibition Plans
The final iteration of "Immortal Code" will take place in a dark, enclosed square room where participants’ presence shapes the space in real time. The visual and auditory elements will create a fully immersive environment, encouraging participants to reflect on the metaphysical implications of their digital footprint.
As a work in progress, this concept remains adaptable, offering opportunities for collaboration, refinement, and experimentation. Whether through partnerships with institutions, technical teams, or other artists, the goal is to push the boundaries of what interactive and metaphysical art can achieve.
Closing Thoughts
"Immortal Code" is both a conceptual exploration and a call to action. It challenges audiences to consider the evolving nature of presence and identity in the digital age while inviting collaborators and partners to join in bringing this ambitious vision to life.
